Another day, another unusual health claim sweeping the Internet. Today, it’s the concept that slathering toothpaste on your boobs could help them look firmer and bigger.
One YouTube user who goes by the name Editorial Naturalbeauty556 recently shared a video titled “Tighten Sagging Breast in Just 5 Days Using Toothpaste No Joke.” In the video, she claims that mixing up a combo of toothpaste, flour, egg whites, and cucumber and applying it to your breasts will firm up your boobs.
According to Editorial Naturalbeauty556, toothpaste “helps shrink pores and it also helps to tighten up the skin.” (Her video has gotten 7.7 million views.)
A YouTube account called Susana Home Remedies posted a video claiming that putting Vaseline on your boobs and toothpaste on your nipples will help them firm up and can increase “the cup size of your breasts.” The video recommends using it “nightly” until you see results. (This one has gotten over three million views.)
These are just two of many, many videos on YouTube where people try variations of this hack to get firmer, larger breasts.
So: Does toothpaste help increase breast firmness and size?
Not so much, says women’s health expert Jennifer Wider, M.D. “It may give a temporary feeling of tightness when the toothpaste dries, but that will quickly disappear when you wash off the toothpaste,” she says. Ditto for Vaseline—it might moisturize the skin on your boobs, but that’s about it.
The only thing this will do is give you minty-fresh boobs, Wider says.
Most women should have no side effects, but some might have skin irritation or contact dermatitis, a skin rash caused by contact with certain substances (in this case, toothpaste), Wider says.
It should be noted that Naturalbeauty556 has a disclaimer below her toothpaste video, stating:
If you want to have firmer-looking boobs, Wider recommends wearing a good supportive bra and doing some pectoral exercises to tone your chest muscles and give your boobs a slight lift. And save your toothpaste for your teeth.
