A Former Royal Marines Commando Shared His Muscle-Building Secrets

Aldo Kane is an adventurer. As a man constantly on the move in extreme environments, he needs to prime his body and train for maximum benefit in the minimum of time.

Having joined the UK’s Royal Marines at 16, Kane is used to hard graft. But it’s his life out of fatigues that has really pushed him to the edge. He has rowed the Atlantic, capsizing half way through after being blind-sided by a wave in the middle of the night. He’s been charged by a rhino while training anti-poaching teams. He’s found himself inside the mouth of an erupting volcano. He’s negotiated with AK47-wielding narcos who are high on cocaine. And, most recently, he’s gone undercover to track down tiger farmers in south Asia.

It’s a varied career. And one that doesn’t allow much time for long sessions in the gym, diligently working through mobility flows and fussing over the nuances of sets and rep ranges. His workouts need to be fast, functional and f*cking hardcore.

Here, he takes you through his go-to moves using a d-ball, dumbbell, pull-up bar and ski-erg. In his own words, he advises you work through multiple rounds of d-ball over the shoulder “until your lungs bleed.” Pull-ups are deployed to help you earn mastery over your own bodyweight along with press-ups – great for when you need to train with no kit. Finally, he recommends all sessions finish with a cardio blast, designed to build both the mental resilience needed to be expedition fit as well as the physical grit. The only question is: Can you keep up?
