When it comes to Conor McGregor, two things are certain. Firstly, the embattled pro fighter will always be announcing either his retirement from or return to UFC. And secondly, regardless of his many legal and reputational issues, his track record of shredded fight night physiques in the octagon continue to inspire fitness influencers to try out his training regime for themselves.
The latest to attempt McGregor’s “notorious” workout is Aseel Soueid, the bodybuilder and YouTuber who has previously attempted eating and training like athletes such as LeBron James, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Given that he’s trying to spend the day hewing as closely to McGregor’s own life as possible, Soueid brings a bottle of the fighter’s whiskey into the gym and takes a shot between each cycle, which is not in any way advisable.
He starts the first cycle of MMA exercises, including boxing and kicking drills which soon leave him dripping sweat.“This is a workout and a half,” he says. “I have not really done high-intensity mixed martial arts like this in quite a long time.”
This is followed by a core-training session which essentially just involves Soueid being punched, repeatedly, in the abs, along with in-and-out crunches, and several one-minute planks. Then the third workout cycle is strength training, comprising bench press, weighted pullups, barbell curls, tricep rope pushdowns, and squats. And if all of that sounds hard… imagine trying it with a stomach full of Irish whiskey.
