Dennis Kimetto breaks the world marathon record in Berlin

Sunday saw a stunning performance by Dennis Kimetto in the Berlin marathon – breaking the world record by nearly 30 seconds. Emmanuel Mutai finished second – also breaking the previous record of Wilson Kipsang.

Some stats that may cause your jaw to drop in disbelief:

New world record: 2hrs 2min 57sec

Average pace per mile was 4min 41.5sec

Average pace over 400m was just under 70 seconds (69.93, to be precise)

Kimetto ran the second half slightly faster than the first – a negative split – 1hr 1min 2sec compared with 1hr 1min 45sec for the first (dawdling, right?)

His 10km splits: 29:24, 29:11, 29:02, 28:52

Important detail for running shoe geeks: shoe worn was the adidas Adizero Adios Boost
