It’s that time of the year again where many of us may have had a blow out over the holiday season and now we want to undo some of the damage by making resolutions, many of which we may not keep.
According to recent stats, around 69% of Australians make resolutions while only 8% keep them. This suggests that many of us are going into the season unprepared!
Here are some of my top tips for sticking to your resolutions in 2018.
Avoid the ‘all or nothing’ approach
Creating a resolution is a great way to get yourself on track to develop lifestyle change, but it’s a process, so going hard for a few weeks and then giving up when you skip one day or fail one time defeats the purpose. Understand that life will throw you curveballs and things will happen that will take you off track. Just because you have one slip up does not mean that you have to give up on the entire goal. I see too many people saying ‘I’ll quit chocolate’ or ‘I’ll go to the gym 3 days per week’ and they fail once and then see the resolution as a fail. Don’t be too hard on yourself. If you really want to make a change, stick to it, even if you do miss a day.
Make it fun
If you are bored of your 2017 workout routine, change it up and try something new in 2018. Or better still sign up to some fitness events to kick-start your fitness and bring your friends. Training is a celebration of what your body can achieve and it should be fun.

Also consider signing up to a fun run or an obstacle course so that you have something to train for.
Make it achievable
So you haven’t been for a run since high school, yet you have decided to sign up for your first marathon in 2018? You have engaged a trainer who has created a running program for you, but because you don’t actually like running, you start skipping your training days almost immediately. A marathon may still be an achievable goal, but if you are setting a goal around something that you don’t even enjoy, the odds of you sticking to your resolution will be slim! When creating a resolution, choose something that you actually want to do, want to change, something you may learn to like if you don’t enjoy it already. It may be the difference between achieving your goal or having yet another failed resolution.
Make a plan
So you have decided to save money in 2018, start training, eat clean etc. Start doing your research now and make a plan on how you are going to achieve it. Find out which bank will give you the highest interest in return, understand why you have made this resolution as it will give you purpose and make a plan. I.e. are you going to save 10% of your pay each week? Having a plan and a purpose is a good way to keep you on track! Remember though, that if your goal is big and will take you a long time to achieve, make sure that you set yourself smaller goals along the way to keep you inspired.

Do it with a friend
Whatever your goal is, having a wingman often makes the journey way more fun so why not find a friend with a similar goal and do it together? That way you will be held accountable because no one wants to be the friend who lets down the team.
