Ethan Suplee looks drastically different than he did when he filmed his most famous roles in Remember The Titans, American History X and My Name Is Earl. The 43-year-old actor has undergone a huge body transformation in the last few years, dropping over 200 pounds by cutting his calorific intake and throwing himself into strength training.
He has also just started a podcast about obesity, American Glutton;in the first episode he opened up about his fitness journey, and his own complicated relationship with food.
“I had this idea that food was something that people didn’t want me to have, so if I wanted to have more, I needed to do it privately, and it became something I was witholding from people,” he said.
“I actually realized later in life that much of my binge eating came on my own. When I was a teenager I would go out to a nightclub with my friends, and never really felt comfortable eating in front of people, but on my way home I’d always find a 24 hour drive-through and eat three whole meals right before bed.”
When it came to making a change, Suplee reduced his daily calorie intake by 20 percent, and changed what he was eating to filling, protein-rich food like turkey and non-fat Greek yogurt. He also started hitting the gym: he trains six days a week, and follows a push-pull-legs workout.
And all that hard work is resulting in some impressive gains. In a recent AMA on Instagram, Suplee revealed that he can now bench 405 pounds: his “proudest lift.”
