The first rule of the gym is safety, and for most people that means avoiding loads that are heavier than they can handle. For lifters like world-class bodybuilder and Arnold Classic champ Brandon Curry, however, there’s also some caution needed to avoid using loads that are heavier than even the equipment itself can handle.
Curry suffered that exact terror recently while training his upper body. As he worked through a set of overhead tricep extensions, he pulled the machine on top of himself. The moment was caught on video, which Curry later shared in an Instagram post. The load set on the machine was too much for it to stay in place combined with the force of Curry’s extension, and the machine tipped over at the top of the rep when the weight was raised.
Luckily, Curry got out of the accident with just some cuts and bruises—given how much weight was coming down on him and the other machines around the room, the outcome could’ve been significantly worse.

Yes, just yesterday during my final exercise, I pull a machine over on top of myself. Once the stack got up so high it made the machine too heavy, as I was performing overhead triceps extensions. Thank God I walked away uninjured just a bump and scrap. Life is uncertain. Things can be going great one second and not so great the other. God is always in control of it all and what can been seen as bad is often for our good. We can’t allow ourselves to get so focus on life we forget about the life giver. Should out to @kuwaitbodybuilding for getting this on film. #noweapon #stayhumble

Curry took the near-disaster in stride, commenting on the aftermath of the incident in his post: “Thank God I walked away uninjured just a bump and scrap,” he wrote. “Life is uncertain. Things can be going great one second and not so great the other.”
Curry was in the midst of training for the 2019 Mr. Olympia competition, which takes place next week (September 11 to 15) in Las Vegas, Nevada. He finished fifth at the event last year, and while the accident was unfortunate, he’s clearly putting as much effort as possible into improving his placement for 2019. Curry is already off to a good start this season, too, as he was able to take first place earlier this year in March’s Arnold Classic.
