Laura Henshaw's Selfie Will Speak To Anyone Battling Breakouts In Iso

Raise your hand if your nightmares also involve emerging from iso with a face full of acne. (I may have picked *one* pimple and 10 more came to its funeral.) Okay, first of all, take a deep breath: we’re in this together. In fact, no one – not even Keep It Cleaner co-founder Laura Henshaw – is immune to battling breakouts.

“So this is what is what I call the coming out of iso mini break out ?” she captioned her latest Insta post showing spots scattering her jawline. “I know I shared a few months ago how my skin had changed during this time, but I wanted to share again to remind you that it actually changes all the time and that is completely ok ❤️.”


Plenty of Laura’s 285k followers gave her kudos for the candid post.

“Mine is literally the same at the moment,” model Elle Ferguson wrote.

“Thank you for doing your part to normalise beauty and what is real Vs what we see. We are all human no one is perfect,” another comment read.

According to Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, there’s a totally logical reason why loads of us are dealing with extra lumps and bumps right now: stress.  While the global pandemic has obviously taken its toll on our physical health, it’s also messed with our mindset (being stuck inside without any close contact IRL does that, btw.) 

“Cortisol production is stimulated by a hormone released from your brain telling your adrenal glands to make more,” he tells Women’s Health. “At the same time, this hormone also binds to your oil glands, turning them on so that they produce more pore-blocking oil, making acne flare-up.”

So, what’s a girl with a Mt Vesuvius-sized zit growing out of her chin to do? Start by prioritising Zs.

“Your cortisol levels naturally decrease when you sleep, then start to rise again when you wake up,” Dr. Zeichner explains. Translation? Your body is continuously exposed to high cortisol levels when you don’t sleep enough, which in turn, leads to more stress. 

And finally, take the extra chill time you have and invest it in your daily skincare regime.

“This time of social distancing has been stressful, but you can also take time you normally never have to care for your skin,” Dr. Zeichner says.
