The Mountain’s Leg Day Might Destroy a Mere Mortal

Thor Björnsson, 2018 World’s Strongest Man and Game of Thrones‘ Mountain, knows not to skip leg day. The strongman just shared a video of a particularly intense leg workout, in which he and his coach Sebastian Oreb challenge each other to push themselves as far as they can go in terms of squats, presses, and curls.

The workout takes some easing into, as Bjornsson is incredibly stiff to begin, having taken a break of a few months after a hectic training and competing schedule that spanned the last several years. “You have to put a lot of weight on your body, and if you haven’t done it in a while, it doesn’t feel good,” says Oreb.

Bjornsson also notes that when he’s not competing and is actually doing his own prep, including wrapping his knees and loading his own weights, it “takes a lot out of you” — although Oreb congratulates him on his tight wrapping technique. “Thor’s become quite the technical lifter these days,” he says. “Technical in every part of his lifting, from the knee wraps to his warmups to movements. He’s not just a big strong guy.”

Bjornsson and Oreb challenge each other to match lift for lift, stacking 25 kg (55 pounds) plates onto their barbells as they progress through the sets. The weights then go up to 150 kg (330 pounds) for a single set of three reps each, and then up to 200 (440 pounds), which is where they really start to sweat.

They finish their squats with 3 sets of 3 reps each at 275 kg (606 pounds), which, while it doesn’t break any records (Bjornsson’s best ever squat was with 460 kg, or 1,014 pounds, while Oreb’s was 375 kg, or 827 pounds), is pretty damn impressive nonetheless.

But it doesn’t end there. Next, they get on the leg press machine where they complete 2 sets of 5 reps each at 100 kg, 150 kg, 200 kg, and 250 kg, before finally finishing with a sweat-inducing session on the leg curl machine that makes The Mountain scream.
