Doing pushups every day has become a standard fitness challenge on YouTube, with the daily rep goal usually in the 100 area. In his latest video, however, vlogger Carson Johns chronicles his progress as he attempts to complete 300 pushups every single day for 30 days, totaling 9,000 reps.
He breaks the 300 pushups down into three different variations, which he performs throughout the day: 100 regular pushups in the morning, 100 triangle pushups in the afternoon, and 100 pike pushups in the evening. “I’m doing 4 sets of 25, that way I don’t get too sore for the following days,” he says. “I’m trying to get my chest to the ground every time, and I lock out every time. There’s no point in me cheating it; if I’m doing it, I might as well do it right.”
While doing 300 reps every single day is physically exhausting, Johns soon finds that his technique and endurance are beginning to improve—even if he’s not yet seeing any physical results. “I’m trying to slow down the reps to make it harder,” he says. “Honestly I’m not seeing any changes in my body, I feel exactly the same… But they are definitely getting easier.”
He increases the difficulty in his pike pushups by performing a feet-elevated decline version, anchoring his hands around a pair of dumbbells. “It gives me so much more range of motion,” he says. And then, as the month progresses, he also changes his classic pushups to wide grip pushups. “These are honestly probably the hardest ones of the entire workout,” he says. “I do 5 sets of 20, and it is not easy at all.”
When the 30 days are through and Johns has 9,000 reps under his belt, he compares his “before and after” photos, and is disappointed to see that there has not been much of a visible change in his physique, beyond perhaps a slight increase in muscle definition in his chest and triceps. However, he is pleased to report that his strength, form and endurance have all improved.
“I’ll be honest, I did get a lot better at pushups, my bench max went up, I just felt stronger overall,” he says.
