Watch Joseph Baena Show Off His 400-Pound Deadlift

Joseph Baena, the bodybuilder son of Arnold Schwarzenegger, frequently posts photos and videos of his workouts to Instagram. And judging from the content he’s been putting out during quarantine, he’s spent the last few months doing nothing but training and recreating his father’s epic bodybuilding poses in the home gym on his rooftop terrace.

In his latest video—the first one shot in an actual gym since lockdown began—Baena shows off his deadlift, pulling more than 400 pounds like it’s no big deal. He manages to complete four reps in the short clip.

“First time deadlifting in a little while,” he wrote. “All I know is that I should have gone for 4 more.”

But while Baena might be disappointed about his rep count after neglecting his lifting training, he is still demonstrating decent deadlift technique on the four-plate lift.

“Form-wise this isn’t bad,” says Men’s Health fitness director Ebenezer Samuel C.S.C.S. “He has some early hip movement that he could eliminate if he pulled the slack out of the bar as a first step, but his hips never rise above his shoulders, which is key to protecting his lower back.”

“Long-term you’d love to see him keep his head down, so his neck stayed in neutral throughout the lift,” Samuel continues. “But again this is a minor thing. He’s moving 405 pounds pretty comfortably here from a mixed grip, and given how fast the weight goes up, he could probably pull more too.”

According to Eddie Hall, the former world record holder for heaviest deadlift, having the correct form is crucial to this particular lifting exercise; he advises checking your foot positioning, your grip, and the position of the bar in relation to your body during training. ” “You get one foundation wrong,” he says, “and it completely goes to shit.”
