Chances are, today is not your birthday, but Facebook wants to send you something sweet anyway. To celebrate the launch of its Birthday Stories, Facebook is forgoing the seconds-long birthday message we’ve all grown accustomed to receiving in our notifications on our big day and is teaming up with bakeries across the country to pass out a treat to anyone who wants one.
On May 9, Facebook launched birthday stories globally, allowing users a new way to give birthday shoutouts to friends, families and loved ones within their social circle. With birthday stories, you can add digital birthday cards, photos or videos to a story.
“It’s like getting a personalized birthday card from everyone you care about, no matter where they are in the world,” Facebook writes in a press release.
It’s easy to create, too. Merely tap on the birthday notification, and then shoot or upload a photo or short video. Or, use one of Facebook’s digital birthday cards to create your birthday message. You even have the option to liven up the message with a music sticker to give the story a personalized soundtrack. Once completed, the birthday wish is added to your friend or family member’s birthday story. Once they receive enough of them, Facebook automatically creates a personalized slideshow for him or her.
Facebook teamed up with 50 bakers, one in each state, to give away free food — today only. They’re also taking over Flour Shop, a bakery in New York City, transforming it into a “Birthday Stories Bakery from Facebook.” Stop in, and pick up sweet treats there if you’re in the area, because why not.
