Justice Clarence Thomas was discharged from the hospital Friday morning, according to media reports.
Until his release, the Supreme Court had not provided an update on his health status since he was admitted to the hospital last week with flu-like symptoms and did not respond to inquiries Thursday, The Hill reported.
The court said in a news release Sunday that Thomas, 73, was “admitted to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C., on Friday evening after experiencing flu-like symptoms. He underwent tests, was diagnosed with an infection, and is being treated with intravenous antibiotics.”
According to the release, his symptoms were improving, and he was expected to be released from the hospital within a day or two.
The court confirmed Thomas did not have COVID-19 but did not elaborate on his status, The Hill reported.
His close friend, Armstrong Williams, told The Hill on Thursday that he is “resting and he’s going to be just fine” but would not say whether he was still in the hospital.
“It doesn’t matter. He’s resting and doing well,” Williams said. “I don’t think the public cares about where he’s resting — it’s that he’s resting and he’s doing fine. I think the media cares about where he’s resting. The public doesn’t.”
Sunday’s news release said Thomas “will participate in the consideration and discussion of any cases for which he is not present on the basis of the briefs, transcripts, and audio of the oral arguments.”
Thomas is the court’s longest-serving member and the second-oldest justice, after 83-year-old Justice Stephen Breyer, who has announced plans to retire this year.
