Iskra Lawrence Just Revealed The Terrifying Details Of Her Home Birth

  • Model Iskra Lawrence gave birth at home last week.
  • She says her baby needed to be resuscitated by her midwife after birth.
  • Iskra says she was in labor for more than 24 hours.

Model Iskra Lawrence just shared with fans that she welcomed her first child, whose name and gender she hasn’t revealed, last week. But, while her Instagram post was happy, Iskra’s description of how her home birth went down was more than a little scary.

Iskra shared all the details in a new Instagram post that featured a photo of herself and her boyfriend Philip Payne smiling over their newborn.

“A.M.P joined team Payne April 16th at 1.05pm here at home. Our first draft pick, but really we are the ones who are so grateful that you picked us to be your parents,” she wrote, before diving into details of the birth.

“After 24 hours of unmedicated active labor and 2.5 hours of transition, our midwife saved your life by resuscitation,” she wrote. “You truly are our miracle and I will be grateful every single day for you.”

Iskra is clearly thrilled with her growing family, but the story of her home birth also sounds terrifying. While an infant needing resuscitation isn’t common, it’s also not unheard of: Anywhere from 4 to 10 percent of newborns need to be resuscitated at birth, according to various studies.

Home births are even less common. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), less than 1 percent of births in the U.S. each year happen at home. Of those, about 25 percent are unplanned. ACOG says in a committee opinion that hospitals and accredited birth centers are the “safest settings for birth,” noting that home births have a more than twofold increased risk of maternal death and a threefold increased risk of the baby suffering from seizures or having serious neurologic dysfunction.

However, ACOG acknowledges that“each woman has the right to make a medically informed decision about delivery.”

Iskra wrapped up her post by saying that “this has been the best week of my life getting to know you and fall more in love each day.” She also thanked Philip, who she said has “shattered any expectation I had of you as a father. Already I am so proud you’re my partner and I’m holding back tears writing this and every time I look at you with our baby.”

Congrats to Iskra and her growing family!
