Watch Hafthor Bj\u00f6rnsson Deadlift Twice His Bodyweight With Larry Wheels

When Hafthor Björnsson deadlifted 501kg (1105lbs) in May 2020 and beat Eddie Hall’s previous world record, he cemented himself into strongman history with the heaviest lift in ever performed.

Having since retired from competitive strongman, 6’9” Björnsson has turned his hand(s) to professional boxing and has secured an exhibition bout with Eddie Hall — dubbed “the heaviest boxing match in history”, which could quash the pair’s on-going beef — set to take place in September 2021 in Las Vegas.

Despite this new focus, Björnsson, now 49kg (110lbs) lighter, is still lifting heavy outside of his hardcore boxing training and recently linked up with powerlifter and bodybuilder Larry Wheels and strongman Mark Boyd for a workout in Dubai. Their aim? To build up to a double-bodyweight deadlift of around 320kg (705lbs).

As shown in the video above, the pair went through a few sets of snatch-grip high pulls and a ‘light’ warm-up of 265kg (584lb) deadlifts — which, unsurprisingly, Björnsson repped out “like a knife through butter” — with the Icelandic strongman and Wheels then moving on to their heavy lifts.

Going toe-to-toe — or, perhaps, barbell-to-barbell, Björnsson and Wheels successfully pulled off a 320kg deadlift wearing weightlifting belts and straps. The 320kg lift, despite being 181kg lighter than Björnsson’s personal best set in May 2020, was more than twice his body weight of 155kg (342lbs). Impressive stuff, you’ll agree.
