Hey, remember when Jennifer Lopez and her boyfriend Alex Rodriguez went on that strict no-sugar, low-carb diet a few weeks ago? Yeah, me too.
Turns out, J.Lo had a specific reason for going on the diet challenge—and no, it wasn’t in preparation to dance on a piano in heels for her Grammy Awards performance on Sunday.
J.Lo stopped by The Ellen Show Tuesday to chat about all kinds of things—including her recent 10-day no-sugar, low-carb diet challenge. According to J.Lo, it was her trainer, Dodd Romero, who originally came up with the idea. Because J.Lo’s a consistent exerciser (I mean, you’ve seen her arms, right?), Romero wanted to do something “to move the needle a little bit,” said J.Lo.
And J.Lo definitely wasn’t lying when she talked about how hard the diet was in her Instagram Stories: “It was really hard,” J.Lo admitted. (J.Lo says her diet is mostly sugar and carbs.) “Not only do you get a headache, but you feel like you’re in an alternate reality or universe. Like, you don’t feel like yourself. You realize that you’re addicted to sugar.”
The celeb said that the challenge gets easier over time, but she couldn’t stop thinking about what she’d eat when she reached the finish line. “I’m like, ‘When can I have sugar again? I’m going to have cookies and then I’m going to have bread and then I’m going to have bread with butter.'”
Even though she was dreaming of sweets and carbs the whole time, she said her cravings subsided by the time she could go back to her old ways. “When you go back to the sugar, you don’t want it as much,” she said.

As for her reason for doing the 10-day diet challenge? J.Lo said it was in preparation for her role in the upcoming film, Hustlers, in which she plays a stripper, per J.Lo. “I’m sure that the outfits are going to be —,” she said, motioning to her body, implying that her wardrobe would be skimpy. “So I’m, like, getting ready for that.”
J.Lo said that she plans to do the challenge again. She and her trainer decided she’ll go off the plan for five days, then start it up again. “It’s something that you get used to a little bit,” she said.
Clearly, J.Lo’s got this no-sugar, low-carb diet thing down. When does the next challenge start, Jenny?
