The Mountain has a new, extra-large, strength sport champion opponent for his much-hyped September boxing match.
Last month, news broke that former World’s Strongest Man Eddie Hall would be forced to pull out of his long-planned grudge match against fellow former World’s Strongest Man Hafthor Björnsson (a.k.a. The Mountain). Hall suffered a rare biceps detachment injury during his training, putting the clash even further from its initial announcement following Björnsson’s record deadlift attempt in May 2020.
Taking Hall’s place will be Devon Larratt, one of the most decorated arm wrestlers of all time. The 6’5” Canadian is a multiple-time World Armwrestling League (WAL) heavyweight champion using both his left and right hand, and currently holds the Legacy Hammer—a symbolic trophy held by the best arm wrestler in the world—for the right hand. Larratt is within Hall and Björnsson’s sphere of extra-large strength sport competitors, taking on Björnsson in an arm wrestling match in 2015 (and beating him handily) and appearing in a workout video with Hall last year. While Larratt is not a small man by any estimation, he’s still giving up four inches and 50 pounds to Björnsson, according to BarBend.
Larratt isn’t exactly picking up Hall and Björnsson’s hardcore trash talk, which has fueled interest in the fight as the two strongmen have transformed themselves into pugilists. “I have a hard time with the word no,” he wrote in an Instagram caption sharing the fight’s promo card.

In fact, Larratt is downright friendly with his opponent. He was recently wishing Björnsson luck in his boxing exploits on Instagram before the former strongman’s most recent exhibition match. “Amazing to watch this guy getting ready for the biggest fight ever!!” Larratt wrote. Now, he’ll be the one facing off against Björnsson from the other corner or the ring.
If you were hoping to watch Björnsson and Hall settle their differences with their fists, you’ll just have to keep being patient. The “World’s Heaviest Fight” will happen eventually, the strongmen insist. When asked about the delay, Björnsson said that Hall’s “doctor has to tell him he’s physically unable to fight the rest of his life” for the match to be totally cancelled. They have a score to settle, after all.
