Drew Barrymore is on a roll. The actor may have taken something of a hiatus from filming, but she’s in no way sitting idle. Instead, Barrymore has used her affable personality, warmth and infectious energy to host a talkshow that’s covered everything from body image, parenting and wellness. You need only tune in to an episode to see that it’s very much Drew Barrymore: it’s endearingly genuine and skews towards authenticity rather than a formal polished veneer like most other talk shows.
Now, the actor-turned-entrepreneur is looking to save the fashion magazine, announcing the launch of Drew, a quarterly lifestyle magazine which will continue where Oprah Winfrey’s O Magazine left off. Since the coronavirus pandemic came to stalk the world, it’s delivered a devastating blow to the publishing industry with a number of titles having to close their publications as a result of dried up advertising and lack of sales. As more of the industry does online, few publishing houses are seeking to make the print magazine a necessity. Drew though, is looking to buck the trend.
In an interview with WWD, the actor explained: “Magazines are such a huge part of my life and they’re such a huge part of my inspiration for everything I do. I’ve lined my walls with magazine tear sheets since I was like 10 years old. I have a picture of myself in my bedroom and it’s like floor to celling and wall to wall. I’ve always loved magazines because of the paper and the experience.”

It’s believed that Drew will focus on celebrity culture and cover everything from beauty, travel and food. It will be available for purchase from Walmart, then most US newsstands with a retail price of $9.99 USD. Naturally, if you’re looking to purchase it here in Australia you might need to look online instead. Drew calls the magazine an “optimism magazine” that is both “very commercial” and “very personal.”
As well as acting as founder of the publication, Drew Barrymore will also pen an agony aunt-type column. The pivot to a print magazine is certainly interesting given the current climate we find ourselves in. It’s also worth noting that given her stance as a celebrity, whether readers will buy into this remains to be seen. Even Gwyneth Paltrow with her cult-like following had to close the print of Goop magazine, which only delivered two issues.

Drew Barrymore explains that she’s committed to getting it right, though. “My goal with the magazine is to get to do a second one and keeping going from there. You just need chances so I hope to get the chance to do another one. That’s where my focus is – not being afraid and not planning too far ahead for what I don’t know is possible yet. I’ve never been good when people are like: ‘Where do you see yourself in five years?’ I’m like: ‘I have no idea.’”
