Kayla Itsines On The Major Thing That’s Missing From Your Self-Care Routine

For most (read: me), the term “self-care” means a good book, bubble bath, block of choccie and a bucket-sized glass of red. But for Kayla Itsines – aka, Australia’s queen of fitness – it’s a different story entirely. The mum-of-one winds down with exercise – not just for her physical health but her mental wellbeing too.
“Discipline comes from getting out of your comfort zone, booking in those workouts and showing up for them day after day, even if you don’t want to do them – this is a form of self-care guys,’ she explains on an episode of Women’s Health UK podcast Going for Goal. ‘[It] isn’t a fancy face mask – it’s showing up for yourself and doing something every day until it becomes a part of your routine and you cannot live without it.”
“Self-care is getting out of bed, it’s having a shower, brushing your teeth and doing a workout. It’s getting out of your comfort zone and doing something that your future self will thank you for.”
And her advice for those who can’t possibly squeeze a sweat sesh into their day? Find one thing you like and stick to it. “Whether it’s a five-minute workout, a cycle ride…whatever it is.”
“I don’t believe you can rely solely on motivation to get you through workouts, simply because motivation is fleeting,” she continues. “You see something or someone and you I think, ‘oh I’m going to be super motivated.’ That comes and goes.’
This is the part where discipline matters most.
“We are busy, we are women, we have families, we have jobs, we have things that we need to do,” Kayla says. “Book it in and show up for yourself…that’s my tough love guys.”
