American College of Physicians recognizes 3 faculty members

The American College of Physicians has recognized three faculty members at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis with national awards honoring excellence and distinguished contributions to internal medicine. They are John F. DiPersio, MD, PhD; Janet B. McGill, MD; and Will R. Ross, MD.

DiPersio, the Virginia E. and Sam J. Golman Endowed Professor of Oncology and director of the Division of Oncology, received the Harriet P. Dustan Award for Science as Related to Medicine. This award is given for outstanding work in any field of science as it relates to medicine. DiPersio specializes in the understanding and treatment of leukemia, especially in innovations in CAR-T cell therapy, optimizing stem cell transplantation and reducing harm from graft-versus-host disease.

McGill, a professor of medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism & Lipid Research, received the Samuel Eichold II Memorial Award for Contributions in Diabetes. This award is given for innovations that significantly improve quality of care or clinical management of patients with diabetes. McGill has led numerous clinical trials investigating new therapies for diabetes and its complications at Washington University, and serves on steering committees and data safety and monitoring boards for national and international studies.

Ross, the Alumni Endowed Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology, received the Oscar E. Edwards Memorial Award for Volunteerism and Community Service. This award recognizes an outstanding commitment to volunteer service. Ross also serves as the associate dean for diversity and the principal officer for community partnerships at Washington University. Among many volunteer roles, Ross has helped open free medical clinics for uninsured patients and serves in many voluntary health-care leadership roles, including on the board of the St. Louis City Board of Health, the St. Louis Regional Health Commission, and formerly the Missouri Foundation for Health.
