Frequent Sitting in front of the TV increases the risk for colorectal cancer

How the television affects the risk for colorectal cancer

Many people spend a large part of their leisure time sitting in front of the TV. Too little movement and durable are not Sitting but good for the health. Doctors found out now that the seat contributes to the end of time in front of the TV and seat the end of time, in General, to an increase in the risk for colorectal cancer. This is true even for persons under the age of 50 years.

The investigation of an international team of scientists from the Harvard Medical School and Washington University School of Medicine has shown that a considerable amount of time which most people spend sitting in front of your TV, leads to an increased risk for colorectal cancer. The experts published the results of their current study in the English journal “JNCI Cancer Spectrum”.

Data from almost 90,000 women were analyzed for the study

The new study examined the data of 89.278 American women at the University of Michigan at the Nurses ‚Health Study II participated. This long-term American health study, examined the risk factors for severe chronic diseases in women. The researchers focused particularly on the time which had passed the women in front of the TV and other sedentary behaviors, in order to investigate a possible connection between prolonged sitting time and newly-diagnosed bowel cancer at an early stage in the age under 50 years.

Risk for colorectal cancer was increased by up to 70 percent

The results showed that more than one hour of television was associated per day with a twelve percent increased risk for colon cancer, compared with participants sitting in and less time in front of the TV. If the women spent more than two hours per day in front of the TV, the risk was increased even more, up to almost 70 percent, the scientists explain. The findings remained even after taking into account the Body Mass Index (BMI) and physical activity of women is still applicable, and even women without colorectal cancer in the family history showed a higher risk due to too much sitting time spent. The doctors found out that the connection between sitting time and a rectal cancer was stronger than for colon cancer.

Also younger people are affected by the risk

Although a sedentary Lifestyle after the age of 50 years, is an emerging risk factor for colorectal cancer, its role in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer at an early stage in young people, previously almost unknown, say the authors of the study. The current results are the first to sedentary behavior pattern associated with increased risk for colorectal cancer in people aged under 50 years. The investigation may help to identify those who are at high risk for colorectal cancer and, therefore, more of an early Screening could benefit, explained study author Yin Cao of the Washington University School of Medicine. The fact that these results were independent of BMI and physical activity, suggests that a seat can be a activity to a completely different risk factor for the Occurrence of bowel cancer, adds the expert. In the United States and around the world, the Rate of colorectal cancer increases developing in the early stages. On the other hand, the Rate of colon cancer is decreased in the elderly dramatically, mainly as a result of cancer screening initiatives. (as)
