Here we take a look at the three most common health conditions affecting men globally.

Oral disorders

Coming at the number one spot was oral disorders, with total cases of around 1,716,782,577 back in 2019.

Oral disorders have a prevalence percentage of 46.57% and are found among 44,236 per 100,000 men.

Previous studies have shown the relationship between individual oral health conditions and mortality.

“Significant tooth loss, root caries, and periodontal disease were associated with increased odds of dying,” noted a study published in the National Library of Medicine.

It further warned that “multiple oral health problems were associated with a higher risk of dying.”

In order to reduce a person’s risk of poor oral health, brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing and regularly visiting your dentist will make a big difference.

Headache disorders

For the second condition causing the most male death globally were headache disorders.

These disorders included total cases of around 1,716,782,577 with a prevalence percentage of 46.57% and 44,236 men suffering with headache disorders per 100,000.

Although not life-threatening, headache disorders can be debilitating and negatively affect a person’s day-to-day-life.

“Headache disorders are among the most common disorders of the nervous system,” says the World Health Organisation.

A Global Burden of Disease Study found that a migraine on its own was the sixth highest cause worldwide of years lost due to disability (YLD) and headache disorders collectively were third highest.

For those prone to headache disorders, eating a healthy diet and ensuring you are drinking enough water can help.

Tuberculosis

The third most common illness or disease among men globally included tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis accounted for roughly 945,388,564 cases with a 25.65% prevalence percentage and roughly 24,360 men per 100,000 suffering with the disease.

“Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection spread through inhaling tiny droplets from the coughs or sneezes of an infected person,” explains the NHS.

“It is a serious condition, but can be cured with proper treatment mainly affecting the lungs.”

Good oral hygiene including washing your hands after coughing and sneezing will help lower your risk of developing tuberculosis.

Other notable diseases and illnesses according to the research include:

  • Cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases 25.29% prevalence among men
  • Age-related (and other) hearing loss 20.13%
  • Hemoglobinopathies and haemolytic anaemias 19.53%
  • Dietary iron deficiency 13.27%
  • Sexually transmitted infections excluding HIV 12.76%
  • Intestinal nematode infections 12.43%
  • Upper digestive system diseases 10.03%
