Watch John Cena Lead You Through His Barbell Snatch Routine

In a recently uploaded YouTube video from 2019, WWE superstars John Cena and Sheamus—aka The Celtic Warrior—highlighted John Cena’s barbell snatch method (aka the snatch to overhead squat) from a workout they did together. In the video, Cena dished on his form and why he loves the move so much.

“The first exercise is a two-stage snatch,” Cena says. “So we’re going to start from the knee just to warm up the movement, and then from the floor.” He continues his warmup with a series of snatches, progressively putting more weight on his bar.

“This is a warmup that I wouldn’t normally do, I’m doing it for you because you don’t do this lift,” Cena tells Sheamus. “Its basically just repeating the movement as much as you can with lighter weight to get familiar with the motion.”

From there, he goes into the actual exercise—the full snatch. “From the floor, one rep,” says Cena. “You’re just going to keep loading on until you feel comfortable for one rep.” After adding more weight, he does another snatch, and tells Sheamus why he likes the move so much.

“I like it for the same reason I like stretching. You have to get to that point where your mind is involved in the exercise…you get up there and you’re thinking, ‘chest up, hips back, legs down, drop the bar.’ So it’s kind of like playing golf with weights.” He says he’s also a fan because it’s a total-body exercise.

“It really is a good exercise because it does use everything. Everything from your toes, all the way up,” Cena says. “It all serves the same purpose—to create a stronger, better you.” Cena starts with single rep sets, then moves to two-rep sets. And he talks about why he doesn’t take much of a break between his sets, too.

“The reason I don’t take time, three or four minutes between sets is I don’t have all day. I’m not one of those guys who’s in the gym all day. Ninety minutes max for me and get the f*ck out, and do what I’m going to do the rest of the day, because there’s a whole life out there to be lived. Get In. Get Out. Get Better. That’s what we’re doing right now.”

Sheamus had some thoughts on their training session, too. “I like to think I can keep pace with this absolute workout machine… that was until he pulled out the snatch exercise during our session. It might look easy to do, but this one is all technique, and I just couldn’t master it, even with very light weight,” he says. To watch Sheamus’s full workout with Cena, click the video below:
