Rob Gronkowski, tight end for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, just set a new Guinness World Record involving a football and a helicopter. While visiting his alma mater, the University of Arizona, for the football team’s spring game, the NFL star made history by catching a football that had been dropped from a chopper which was hovering at a height of 600 feet, officially breaking the world record for the “highest altitude catch” of all time.
Wearing his old team jersey for the occasion at Arizona Stadium, Gronk dropped the ball the first two times, and then triumphantly caught it on the third attempt, to rapturous applause from the team (and his fellow honorary spring game coach, retired linebacker Tedy Bruschi). It’s the kind of jaw-dropping feat that fans have come to expect from a player whose athletic prowess is only outshone by his personality and love of a good stunt.
“Every time you step on the field, you’ve got to raise that bar to another level, baby,” Gronk said to the current University of Arizona football team. “And I just raised that bar to this level.”
This is far from Gronk’s first historic achievement; back in 2011, he secured the record for most touchdown receptions by an NFL tight end in a single season (17, to be exact). Not to mention he has four Super Bowl wins and five Pro Bowl wins to his name. And, of course, that unforgettable stint as the White Tiger on The Masked Singer.
