Do as the Brits do! Duchess Meghan’s opulent February baby shower in New York City was met with varied reviews by the British media — and mixed feelings by the royal family.
“Meghan is still struggling with the press in London. She was made aware that Kensington Palace and the royal family, that’s not the way they do it with a big, flashy baby shower like the one she had in NYC,” a source exclusively tells Us Weekly, noting that the Duchess of Sussex, 37, didn’t receive “a scolding” for her soiree in the states, but was informed that it strays from the norm.
Queen Elizabeth II’s former press spokesperson, Dickie Arbiter, previously shared a similar sentiment with Us about Meghan’s lavish celebration. “Baby showers, it’s very much an American thing,” he explained to Us earlier this month of the Duchess of Sussex’s star-studded party at The Mark Hotel with famous friends, including Amal Clooney and Abigail Spencer. “We don’t do it here in the U.K. It was a bit over the top in terms of expense and the way she got there.”
Despite the reaction, Meghan is planning on having a second shower in the U.K. with family and friends, including husband Prince Harry, mother Doria Ragland and sister-in-law Duchess Kate, who will be hosting. Arbiter explained of the upcoming bash, “Meghan is American and she does things the American way.”
Although the former actress will celebrate her pregnancy in the first week of April, she has been feeling anxious during her final trimester. “Sources close to Meghan say that, like any new mom-to-be, she’s feeling somewhat nervous as the due date approaches, but Harry is there by her side,” royal reporter Omid Scobie told Good Morning America on Wednesday, March 27, of Meghan, who is due in late April or early May. “He’s decreased a lot of his work to be there for his wife.”
