How to sleep: Five expert tips to achieve a good night’s sleep in the heat

Hot weather and longer daylight hours during the summer months can make getting the required sleep you need very difficult. Most people need around eight hours of good-quality sleep to function properly. A lack of sleep can increase the risk of serious health conditions, including obesity, heart disease and diabetes. So what can you do to make sure you get enough sleep in the heat?

Silentnight sleep expert Dr Nerina Ramlakhan advises in order for people to sleep well, there needs to be a “fractional temperature difference between our body and brain”.

This means a warm body and cool head.

On the beds and mattresses manufacturers website, Dr Ramlakhan offers five tips for staying cool to ensure a good night’s sleep when it’s hot.

1. Stop your bedroom over-heating during the day

During the day keep curtains and blinds closed.

2. Use water

Wash your feet with cold water before getting into bed, and run your wrists under cold water.

3. Have the right bedding

You should use light bed sheets and a summer duvet. Dr Ramlakhan recommends a 4.5 tog duvet.

4. Consider changing your mattress

Dr Ramlakhan recommends a Geltex mattress from Silentnight, which has an innovate combination of elastic gel and air-permeable foam to prevent the body from overheating.

5. Stay hydrated

It’s essential to stay hydrated during the day to enable a good night’s sleep , says Dr Ramlakhan.

She adds: “Most importantly, don’t fret too much if you can’t sleep. Use the time to rest and think positive thoughts to help you be extra productive the next day.”
