Coca-Cola has had a field day as of late releasing new diet fruit flavors, like strawberry guava and blueberry acai; and prior to that, the company launched its first new flavor in more than one decade, orange vanilla. Now, Coke is diving head first into globally releasing a coffee-infused beverage in more than 25 markets by the end of this year.
The drink, as one would guess, is Coke mixed with coffee. Although it doesn’t have quite as much caffeine as one cup of coffee, it does have more caffeine than one can of soda; so there’s that.
According to Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey, this move on Coke’s part is intended to be a 2 p.m. pick-me-up.
“Coke Coffee was designed to reach consumers during specific occasions and channels like the mid-afternoon energy slump at work,” he says.
This isn’t Coke’s first foray into launching a coffee-infused beverage, but it’s certainly their biggest attempt at a massive, global release — and with good reason. In a report published by Mintel in September 2017, the ready-to-drink coffee market was predicted to grow 67 percent through 2022. Needless to say, it’s a smart move on Coke’s part, but will it succeed?
Previous attempts at releasing a coffee beverage include Coca-Cola Blak in 2006, then again in 2017 when Coke released Coca-Cola Plus Coffee in Australia.
If coffee-infused soda doesn’t float your boat, Pepsi just added three new fruity flavors as well. They include summer-appropriate Pepsi Berry, Pepsi Lime and Pepsi Mango.
Looks like we’re in the midst of a battle of the soft-drink beverages this year, and we can’t wait to watch this play out.
